At
Fathom Five,
we are extremely proud of our service and equipment but most of
all...we are proud of our staff. When diving with us, you will receive
the safest, most comfortable, and most enjoyable dive trips available
anywhere on Kauai. We want your experience with us to be not only
the highlight of your vacation (or business trip...we won't tell
'em you actually had fun), but something you will talk about for
years to come.
|

|
Fathom
Five is owned and operated by Jeannette & George Thompson (Jeannette
actually runs the company but lets George play with the cash register
and the "air blowey thing" in the back to keep him occupied).
Not only did they meet while diving, they got married on the
same beach they met on two years later. After introducing all of their friends,
family members (and anyone that happened to walk too close to George)
to the sport they loved so much, they realized the only way to be
truly happy was to make diving a permanent part of their lives.
Originally
from California, George and Jeannette have lived on the
island of Kauai for 18 years. After working for just about every dive shop
on the island but finding none that they felt truly shared their
love of the sport, they decided in 1995 to branch out on their own.
They founded Ocean Quest Water Sports, a shore dive company. After
only 2 years of operation, they discovered that they had been rated
by many publications as being
one of the top rated dive companies
in Kauai. This sudden exposure and recognition gave them an
idea...what if we could expand and offer our customers a "total
dive solution", not just shore diving? This prompted the purchase
of Fathom Five Divers.
|
Jeannette and George are not the kind of owners that just
sit back and watch, they participate. Both are PADI
Instructors, MSDT's (Master Scuba Diver Trainer) Both have
worked at the Hyper Baric Treatment Center here on Kauai (its
now on Oahu) and both are truly passionate about diving (with
their dives logged in the thousands). With Jeannette doing most
of the North shore diving in the
summer and George working the boat there is a good
chance you'll dive with at least one of them. Being hands-on
makes sure that the treatment that you get will always be top
notch.
It
also runs in the family, four of their five children are
certified divers with Keoki just completing his (at 11 he
is the youngest out of all his brothers and sisters to get
certified) and Elora, their 8 year old, is chomping at the bit
to get going. |

|
With
Fathom Five focusing on boat diving operations and Ocean Quest on
shore diving, the two best companies have formed the perfect solution
to everyone's diving needs.

At Fathom
Five Ocean Quest, you are the most important person on our crew,
and our goal is to provide you with a dive experience unmatched
anywhere. By making sure you have the best dive available we can guarantee
that you will return year after year to dive with us. From the bad
jokes to the great dives you'll never have a better experience
anywhere! |
This
is why we are the best rated shop on Kauai, by putting yours
needs first. Just give us a call and we will show just how great a
diving experience can be.

Our
instructors have over 100 years of combined experience (80 of those
years are from one guy but we don't let him dive anymore). When
we choose our instructors or boat captains, we look for the following...skills
at working with people, patience, understanding, professionalism
and above all a dedication to safety. By choosing a team of professionals
that share these qualities and combining that with their love of
diving, we are able to guarantee that all of our customers are given
the best experience possible.
Check out the profiles below:
|
|
Loni Adams Shop Manager - Instructor:
We pride ourselves in our shop! Without Loni
running the joint it would look like George's closet (don't
ask!). Loni joins us from California
and is an integral part of keeping the place running.
If not for Loni we'd still have one T-shirt in one size and
one color! And I swear I'm not saying all this because
he's my in-law. |

|
Len Scovel Captain - Instructor:
The oldest of our crew (and we mean that as
both the Oldest and the one who's worked here the longest) Len
has more time underwater then most people have sleeping.
He's a die hard Laker and Dodger fan but don't tell him the
score until he can get home to watch the game! Len is
a USCG licensed Captain, a PADI Master Instructor and he's
spent some time as a Hyperbaric Tech, you just can't find
guys like this these days . With over 20 years experience Len's a
great guy to have on your dive trip. |
 |
|
Charlie Schmitt Captain -
Instructor: Right behind Len Charlie has
been with Fathom Five for over 20 years. His love of a
good joke and quick wit are known throughout the diving
community. His passion for diving is only surpassed by his
desire to play Golf or drink beer. (We're not sure which comes
first.) After teaching diving in the Midwest for two years
Charlie envisioned a more tropical diving environment. He landed his first diving job in Kauai without ever visiting Hawaii and the rest is history.
His plans for the future are simple; retire from Fathom Five at
the ripe old age of 80. A PADI instructor, Medic First
Aid Instructor and USCG Captain Charlie has the
knowledge and experience to make your dive a great one. |
 |
|
Ken Bail
Captain - Instructor:
Formally an owner of Bubbles
Below, Ken now is an important part of our team. With
his extensive knowledge of the sea and the many dive sites
that he helped discover, Ken has brought to Fathom Five a very
laid back and professional attitude. He's always ready to
share a story or a beer (heck Ken even has underwater beer
signs, Just ask him). One of the best, we're proud to have him
here at Fathom Five. |

|
|
Paul Crowe Captain - Instructor:
A marine Biologist from the university of Santa
Cruz California (ask George), Paul is one of our best. His gentle and
mild ways are truly an asset to an instructor. He takes
his time never rushes and always makes his divers feel as if
their his best friends. With his knowledge of the reef he is
truly a great guide. A local folk hero of sorts as he
escorted some lucky customers and got to see a whale shark.
Paul is also one of our talented Captain's. Trained by
the three best Captains, Paul has quickly been turned into
an old sailor.

|
Mark Davy
Captain - Instructor: If you are looking
for a fun boat trip then take a ride with Mark. Always
happy and having fun, Mark has been a staple at Fathom Five
since 2001. He recently got his Captain's license so
you'll see him behind the helm and under the boat diving. Drivin' and divin'! Mark has dove all over Mexico and
the Caribbean and even done some of that cold diving in
California. Mark has the eyes for the Octopus' so
you'll always get to see one with him leading your dive.
In his off time Mark will be happy to cruise the open
highway on his prized motorcyle. |
 |
|
Debbie Engdahl
Captain - Instructor: If you could
bundle all of Debbie's excitement up you would have the sun!
A long time resident of Kauai (17 years) Debbie has enjoyed
learning and observing all of her little creature friends in
the ocean. Observing behaviors is a favorite past time
of hers under water. Above water she has 6 kids with
24 legs and another 30 kids with 60 legs...get it? 3
dogs, 3 horses and 30 math students at Kauai High.
Like we said she's got some energy to burn! Diving
with Debbie is always a pleasure! Debbie has often
been over heard saying that anytime she can be underwater
showing off the reef she's happy. |

No Debi isn't a plumeria! Pic coming soon!
|
Anthony Kuntz
Instructor - Guide:
Our top notch staff is exemplified by our
import from California/Michigan. Anthony
trained with us when he was a young pup on the diving scene.
He spent some time in Maui and knows his way around a speargun pretty well. He loves the sea and goes a bit crazy if
he's not in it everyday. Always up for adventure and some
good story Anthony will truly make your dive a great
experience!
|

|
|
Gregg Aidikoff
Instructor - Guide: We felt we needed a
little Hollywood in our lives at Fathom Five so we brought
in Gregg from California. His prior dive job was as an
instructor for some pretty famous names in Beverly Hills,
he'll be more then happy to share some stories. Gregg
also works in the movie biz and has a family business that
creates and runs high end movie theaters around North
America. His son Zeb is his greatest gift, followed by
his motorcyle and of course the ocean. |

|
|
Rob Lucas
Instructor - Guide: This Pacific
Northwesterner hails from Vancouver and shares an enthusiasm
about diving few can match. If he's not diving he's
not having fun, well he may be having fun if a tallboy is in
his hand. Rob loves Hawaii's sharks and can share a
ton of stories about sharing his prized catches with our
various reef sharks.
|

|
|
Dan Lucas
Instructor - Guide: When we find one
good employee we import their siblings. Dan joined the
Fathom Five crew recently and was personally trained by
George and the other pro's in our crew. Dan can often
be seen falling off our shore line into the blue in search
of the next greatest dive. Hopefully he tells us when
he finds it... |

No Dan is not THE Duke! Pic coming soon!
|
|
Linda Instructor - Guide:
Linda is one of our newest instructors but
don't let that fool you, this woman is top notch! She
was hand picked and trained by George and Jeannette.
You'll see her over summer up at Tunnels with Jeannette.
A great attitude, fun perspective and talented diving
ability make Linda an excellent part of the Fathom Five
staff. |
